When it comes to a yeast infection, women are far more likely to suffer than men. A yeast infection can make the itch unbearable, and is never pleasant for anyone. But just why is it that women are more prone to suffering?

The reason is down to “Candida albicans”. This is a microorganism that’s present in the damp areas of our body. Usually, Candida does us no harm, as our body maintains a balance between good and bad bacteria. However, this balance can become uneven due to certain external factors, leading the Candida to grow, causing the various symptoms of yeast infection.

Women are more likely to suffer from this due to a number of risk factors. Around 25% to 50% of women have the microorganisms in their body that can cause the infection. When this balance is disrupted the Candida will grow, as well as the infected areas.

What this means for you is that treating Candida means treating the symptoms and factors that have caused it. One cause can include taking antibiotics, as these disrupt the microorganisms of our bodies causing yeast infection.

Women are also at a greater risk of the condition due to their estrogen levels. Those who take birth control bills that include estrogen, and those who are pregnant, may be more prone to yeast infections.

Other causes of a yeast infection can include: feminine hygiene sprays, fabric softener, detergents, contraceptives and more. Sometimes bacteria grows more as we get older, especially during menopause. Unfortunately when it comes to the yeast infection, women can’t avoid their natural susceptibility! But knowing the risk factors can help you to avoid them.
